Ich fungiere bei dieser ganzen Sache als die fleißige Assistentin, die Jahr für Jahr dabei hilft, die Unmengen an Trauben, Tomaten und Pflaumen in Marmelade, Saft und Chutney zu verwandeln. Und natürlich trage ich auch einen Teil dazu bei, die vielen Möhren, Rote Beeten, Gurken, Kürbisse, Zucchinis, Zwiebeln, den Knoblauch, Fenchel, Kohl und Salat in unseren saisonalen Speiseplan zu integrieren. Auch in Sachen Obst sind wir mit zwei Spalier-Äpfeln, einer Naschibirne, einem Pfirsich- und einem Pflaumenbaum sowie einer potenten Weinrebe ganz gut aufgestellt. Von den Erdbeeren, Himbeeren und Blaubeeren kriegen wir Erwachsenen leider nicht viel mit. Die werden von den Kindern direkt vom Strauch gefuttert.
Für mich ist das: Fülle. Und erzeugt in mir ein Gefühl von Einklang. Jedes Jahr erleben wir aufs Neue das Erwachen der Natur nach dem Winter. Bereiten die Beete vor für die Aussaat im Frühling. Erleben die ersten Wildbienen, die ausschwärmen. Hören das Piepsen neugeborener Vögel in unserem Nistkasten. Wir sehen, wie unsere Arbeit im Laufe des Sommers Früchte trägt. Und wir können diese ernten. Im Spätsommer und Herbst ist dann die wohl stressigste Phase: Hier kochen wir ein, was wir nicht mehr frisch essen können. Und wenn dann im Herbst das Wintergemüse und der Gründünger ausgesät ist, können wir – zumindest was den Garten angeht – die Beine hochlegen. Und vom Pflaumenkompott mit Zimt naschen.
Das klingt alles ziemlich nach Landleben. Dabei wohnen wir mitten in der Stadt! Dr. Schreber machts möglich. Und das auf nur wenigen Quadratmetern Erde.
Was sich hier so einfach runterschreibt, ist jedoch auch echte Arbeit und kostet viel Zeit. Neben allem anderen, was man sowieso noch alles zu tun hat. Die Sache mit dem (teilweisen) Selbstversorgen ist nichts, was nebenbei läuft. Wenn am Wochenende die Beete umgegraben werden müssen, geht halt der Ausflug ins Grüne nicht. Und wenn im Spätsommer die Trauben reif sind, gibt’s dann halt drei Tage meditatives Traubenputzen inklusive Wurmentfernung statt Fahrradtour zum See. Das Ergebnis überzeugt mich aber immer wieder: Unsere Traubenmarmelade habe ich in noch keinem Supermarktregal gefunden!
